Antimicrobial Resistance in (AMR) Africa: Smoldering in the Shadows
نویسنده
چکیده
Iruka Okeke has observed the medical tragedies in Africa up close and from an academic perch – a dual perspective that has made her, at 32, one of the leading young scientists to study the continent’s antibiotic resistance threat. Now assistant professor of biology at Haverford College, Okeke serves as APUA chapter advisor for sub-Saharan Africa. Trained initially as a pharmacist, Okeke now studies newly-isolated E. coli strains as potential reservoirs of resistance genes. The daughter of Nigerian émigrés, she was born in London and attended high school, college, and graduate school in her parent’s native country.

A review of antimicrobial resistance in East Africa
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Knowledge of local and regional antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is important for clinical decision making. However, surveillance capacity for AMR is lacking throughout East Africa, and current AMR data are sparse. We sought to address this gap by summarising all available high-quality data on AMR in the East Africa region. METHOD We searched the PubMed database and Af...
متن کاملAntimicrobial Resistance of Sterile Site Infections in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Systematic Review
Sparse data exist from sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) on the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). A prior review of antimicrobial resistance in SSA from 1990 to 2013 showed a high prevalence of AMR to commonly used antibiotics in this setting. We reviewed the literature published since 2013. Four databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane, and African Journals Online) were searched for articles bet...
متن کاملStepwise approach for implementation of antimicrobial resistance surveillance in Africa
BACKGROUND Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has reached an end point, prompting a worldwide scare as no new antibiotics are in the pipeline, particularly for treatment of Gram-negative bacteria. To prevent further development and spread of AMR and to inform empirical treatment guidelines, surveillance of AMR is necessary. OBJECTIVE We aim to provide a framework for a stepwise approach toward im...
متن کاملEmerging Antibiotic Resistance in Africa, Threat to Healthcare Delivery
Submit Manuscript | http://medcraveonline.com The imminent end of the antimicrobial era is a major challenge in medicine. As more otherwise “normal“ micro-organisms become implicated in different infections and established pathogens show new and/or extended resistance to otherwise effective antibiotics, many therapeutic options are being challenged. This has made the World Health Organization (...
متن کاملAntimicrobial drug resistance among clinically relevant bacterial isolates in sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic review.
BACKGROUND Little is known about the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) amongst bacterial pathogens in sub-Saharan Africa (sSA), despite calls for continent-wide surveillance to inform empirical treatment guidelines. METHODS We searched PubMed and additional databases for susceptibility data of key pathogens for surveillance, published between 1990 and 2013. Extracted data were stan...
